Chapter Ten

Folks were whispering and stopping in the middle of the boardwalks to stare. Drivers passing them in the street gaped at the sight of the two of them riding through town. Lucy’s cheeks flamed, but she squared her shoulders. She knew what people were saying about her sharing a bed with Mason, but the marriage would put an end to the stigma.

What was she going to do about the night to come? She would be lying next to her big, brawny husband in the same bed for a long, tempting eight hours. She could only imagine how her body would react to that. Not to mention the problems she’d have if he slept naked. Which made the image of his really great penis flash into her mind.

What could she say? She was a woman. She couldn’t help it.

“Lucy?” Mason’s voice broke into her thoughts.

She blinked. The feed store loomed in front of her, shrouded in white. She dismounted, surprised to find Mason at her side, hand on her elbow, helping her through the snow and up the steps.

“I’ll tie up the horses.” He wouldn’t look at her.

She wondered what marrying her had cost him.

“C’mon, Lucy.” Garth was at her side, hauling her across the boardwalk and into the store. His anger was palpable. He looked too angry to speak.

Which was her good luck. She brushed snow off her hood and headed straight to the potbellied stove in the middle of the store.

“What’s going on?” Harry asked, looking up from the counter. “Garth, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this mad before.”

“I can almost see smoke coming out of his ears,” Cade, the youngest, teased, but his humor died when Garth glared at him.

“This is no laughing matter,” Garth bit out. “Our sweet little Lucy defied me—”

“It won’t be the first time,” Harry pointed out.

“Or the last,” Lucy agreed, holding her hands out to the warmth of the stove.

“She married McKenna.” Garth could hardly get the words out between his tightly gritted teeth. He looked ready to explode. Lucy really did feel sorry for him.

“I didn’t mean to defy you,” she told him softly, knowing he was on the edge. “It was the only way I could think to save us.”

“You shouldn’t have done it. We’re not worth that.” His hard words echoed in the silent store. Harry and Cade seemed shell-shocked. Mac strolled in looking miserable.

“Look around you.” She gestured at the aisles. “The store is empty, and it’s not because of the weather. You haven’t had a single order all day, have you?”

“No.” Harry hung his head. “We did have more than one loyal customer who came in to lecture us about how we’re handling things in our family, meaning you. Our father would be turning over in his grave.”

“What’s done is done.” She drew herself up to her full height. “I solved the problem, and you boys have to accept it. You don’t have to like it, but you do have to be civil. We’re family. We have to pull together.
